Our “Chief Officers”, otherwise known as the “Leadership Team”, are the guiding lights of Rolling River. Led by Directors Rhonda and Mark Goodman, this dedicated and experienced group works tirelessly throughout the year and during the summer so that our campers’ experience will be positive, safe and successful. The team also mentors and supervises our staff prior to and throughout the camp season. All of the members of our diverse and talented leadership team work year-round in diverse professions including education, business management and medicine.
Ron Fluss – Associate Director
Ron has been an integral part of the Rolling River experience as Senior Associate Director, since he helped found the camp in 1993. Ron is responsible for hiring all of the outstanding crew members who take care of our campers each summer. He works tirelessly throughout the year to find the most highly qualified staff that any day camp has to offer. Ron is involved in virtually every facet of the organization including supervising our maintenance staff, who diligently work to keep our facilities safe and immaculate. Not only does Ron bring over 35 years of camp experience to the table, but he is an experienced educator who has been teaching Special Education for many years in the New York City Public schools.
Marissa Goodman Allaben- Associate Director
Daughter of Directors Rhonda and Mark, Marissa has been living and breathing the Rolling River spirit since its inaugural season in 1993. Marissa grew up at camp beginning at the age of 3. She attended Rolling River as a camper and assistant counselor as well as attended overnight camp for many years. After graduating from Cornell University’s business program in 2006, Marissa held positions on both the client and agency sides in the advertising industry, specializing in events, sponsorships, and consumer promotions. She returned to RRDC as a full-time crew member in 2010 and developed our successful Campmates Sponsor Program, which encourages local businesses to sponsor the tuition of a deserving camper from Peninsula Counseling Center. Marissa recently completed her M.B.A in small business management/entrepreneurship and continues to bring innovative ideas to the “Riva” in technology, marketing, community development and programming.
Alison Goodman Rothenberg – Sales and Events Manager
Alison joined the year-round supervisory team in 2011 as our Sales and Events Manager. Also the daughter of Directors Rhonda and Mark, Alison has moved up the ranks at Rolling River since 1993 as a camper, CIT, assistant group counselor, head group counselor and bus driver. Hundreds of Rolling River campers, parents, and staff have personally interacted with Alison through the years and can’t get enough of her abundant energy, high spirit and caring personality. Alison also works closely with the supervisors as the liaison for campers with special needs, planning and implementing summer and winter special events and birthday parties, staff training, marketing, assisting the Skipper Division and more. Alison graduated from Hofstra University with a Masters in Early Childhood & Special Education and currently is the lead teacher in a nursery class at Oceanside Kindergarten Center.
Jill Bloom – Skipper Division Supervisor (Ages 2-5)
Jill has spent nearly every summer of her life at summer camp! A native of Oceanside, she could be seen smiling and laughing at Camp DeBaun for thirty-one years. Jill began as a preschool camper and worked her way up the ranks. During the past 15 years, when Jill is not in camp, she teaches ELA in the NYC Public School system. No stranger to working with children, Jill has also taught in preschool and is extremely involved in her 2 childrens’ extra-curricular activities. Her husband, Roger, is also an educator as Principal of Island Trees Memorial Middle School. After working at Rolling River Day Camp since 2007 in our Skipper Division Specialty Area, as well as leading many Skipper Special Events, Jill joined the Leadership Team as our Skipper Division Supervisor. She has proven to the staff and parent body that she is a true professional, and most important to our Skipper campers, extremely patient and very nurturing!
Fran Oosterom – Mariner Division Supervisor (Grade 1-4)
Fran joined the Rolling River leadership team in 1998 as Mariner Division Supervisor after accruing many years of camping experience at several notable day camps in the area. She is responsible for all of the boys and girls in our Mariner Division which includes campers entering 1st thru 4th grades. She has taught and worked in an administrative role in South Jamaica, Queens for 25 years. Fran prides herself on her ability to communicate well with campers, parents, staff, and colleagues. She is truly a hands-on leader who is loved by both campers and her crew.
Anthony Bruno – Navigator Division Supervisor, Program Supervisor (Grades 5-8)
Anthony Bruno, who has a background in Physical Education, Special Education and Sports Coaching, has been a positive fixture at Rolling River since 2001 as a counselor and Assistant Supervisor in our Navigator Division. His extensive experience working with children, as well as facility management during pre and post camp seasons, enabled “Bruno” to be the perfect segue to join the Leadership Team on in 2012. Anthony now serves as our Operations and Program Manager and is very instrumental in being responsible for trip scheduling, daily programming, on-site technology and facility improvements. Anthony loves coming to work knowing that it’s another day to make a positive impact on a child’s life. In 2013, Anthony took the reins from his older sister Chrissy (a 21 year Rolling River veteran) to oversee our oldest campers as Navigator Division Supervisor in addition to his off-season responsibilities. During the off-season, Anthony is Learning and Development Specialist at Portledge School in Locust Valley.
Jim Long – Trip Supervisor
Jim’s career at Rolling River started in 1999 as a head counselor, and soon became the Supervisor of Athletics. Presently, as our Trip Supervisor, he works very hard at providing organized, safe journeys when he accompanies our Skippers, Mariners, Navigators and CITs on many of their summer excursions. Jim can still be found on the fields and courts when not on trips helping both campers and crew alike enjoy their athletic experience. During the school year, Jim teaches Physical Education at P.S. 105 in Far Rockaway. He coaches the basketball and volleyball teams and has also served as a basketball referee for 16 years. Jim was actively involved in the Oceanside American Little League for many years. His son and daughter have grown up at Rolling River Day Camp as two of our most enthusiastic campers.
Jonathan Goodman – Athletics Supervisor
The youngest son of Directors Rhonda and Mark Goodman, Jon, otherwise known as “Goodies”, has been connected to Rolling River since he was two years old. Jonathan grew up at Rolling River as a camper, assistant counselor, head counselor and bus driver as well as attended overnight camp for seven years. Jonathan’s abundant energy translated into a love for sports and growing up, he excelled in a variety of areas including baseball, basketball, hockey and golf. Jonathan earned both his bachelors and masters degrees from SUNY Cortland in physical and health education and served as the Recreational Services Supervisor for Cortland’s popular Intramurals Program. Jonathan has worked in local schools as a physical education teacher and joined the Rolling River Leadership Team in 2013 as the Athletics Supervisor. He now works at Rolling River year-round organizing off-season programs such as Holiday Camp, Great Date Night and our festivals as well as assisting with various other operational projects.
Doreen has worked as a lifeguard at the Rolling River pool since 1998 and joined the leadership team as Aquatics Supervisor two years later. She is responsible for running our American Red Cross swim instruction program and coordinating private swim lessons for our campers. During the year she works as a Teacher’s Aide in an elementary school in the area. She is proud to have seen campers who were afraid to put their face into the water become avid swimmers. Doreen is also excited to see many of them grow up at Rolling River and become responsible counselors and lifeguards, as well as caring, loving adults. She and her three children, who all have been successful swim instructors at RRDC, have made their lifelong best friendships at Rolling River.
Alicia Stone – Health Care Supervisor
Alicia has been keeping our RRDC campers and counselors healthy as the Health Care Supervisor since the day camp opened in 1993 . She has been dedicated to improving our exceptional health care program and has created a number of innovative ideas like our “travel-nurse” who accompanies campers and crew on off-campus trips. Alicia supervises a wonderful staff of 5 nurses. She grew up in Oceanside and attended Hunter College-Bellevue School of Nursing (BSN), Boston University (MS in Parent-Child Nursing), Molloy College (Family Nurse Practitioner) and is currently earning a Doctorate in Nursing at Molloy College. During the school year, she is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Molloy College. Her three children are all Rolling River alumni and currently work as part of our crew.
Since 1997 Caroline has held various positions at Rolling River. She has worked as a teacher’s assistant in the nursery school, head counselor in the Skipper Division, and in 2006 took on the position as the Transportation Supervisor. Her responsibilities include organizing the bus runs, training our bus drivers while they complete the Commercial Driver’s License application process, assigning bus counselors and keeping the camp up to code according to the New York State Department of Transportation. Caroline is extremely knowledgeable and up-to-date on all new regulations and policies. She loves working with our staff and watching the children as they are safely transported to and from camp each day.
Arnold has been Rolling River’s Facility & Maintenance Supervisor since 2000. He and his team work tirelessly year-round to ensure that Rolling River’s facility is one of the most meticulous and safe campgrounds on Long Island. Almost every person that visits Rolling River’s campus comments on how immaculate and beautiful the grounds are kept. Arnold’s talents, skills, creativity, dedication, and loyalty have made him a valuable “behind-the-scenes” asset to RRDC!
