Staff Spirit Committee

Hey let’s face it, even the counselors want to have fun this summer! That’s why the spirit committee was formed over 10 years ago. The committee plans events and activities FOR STAFF ONLY, that keep the “blue shirts” happy and engaged throughout the summer. Most of our events take place after camp hours. This provides counselors an opportunity to socialize with each other, and make friendships that help our jobs to be even more special and fun!

Any staff member is welcome to join the spirit committee! Our committee represents a wide array of counselors all who have varied interests and ideas. Below is a sample of the activities we have had over the past few summers:

  • Nighttime beach volleyball/pizza party*
  • Nighttime camp pool games/swim*
  • Nighttime sports*
  • Card game tournaments
  • Weekly dinners at local restaurants
  • Weekend trips to Mountain Creek/Splish Splash waterparks
  • Weeknight baseball games at Shea Stadium/Long Island Ducks
  • Pep Squad for the Staff Softball Team
  • "Welcome Committee" to facilitate "Meet Your Mateys" Day
  • Staff member band concerts*

*These are events that take place in camp, when all of the campers are home for the night

One of the flagships of the spirit committee for the past 5 summers has been COUNSELOR SURVIVOR, an interactive game played by the staff throughout the summer, similar to the reality television show (but with no bug eating, marathons, or other gross tasks). Counselors are split into color “tribes”, and must win puzzle and game challenges or be forced to vote out their teammates. Since its inception in the summer of 2002, there have been over 220 contestants in this popular game, but only 5 champions:

  • 2002 – Judy Jones (Mariner Girls Assistant) WHITE TRIBE
  • 2003 – Jodi Katz (Mariner Boys Head Counselor) RED TRIBE
  • 2004 – Seth Bobrow (Mariner Boys Head Counselor) CYAN TRIBE
  • 2005 – Heath Levine (C.I.T. Supervisor) BLUE TRIBE
  • 2006 – Joe Wexler (Mariner Boys Assistant) ASH GRAY TRIBE
  • 2007 - Shannon Cooke (Mariner Girls Assistant) RED TRIBE
